Figure Skating
At the Olympic Games. Each of figure skating’s four disciplines are adjudicated by a separate panel of 9 International Skating Union (ISU) championship judges using a computer scoring system to measure the quality of each performance. Before each event, there is a secret and random draw to determine which judges’ scores will form the result of the segment. Only seven of the 9 scores are used. A new draw is done for each segment. During each performance the judges assign a grade of execution (GOE) to every element that is executed. This makes up the technical score. At the conclusion of each performance, the judges assign additional program component scores that measure the overall technical and presentation abilities of the skater or team.

The individual or team with the highest totals of technical and program component scores is deemed the winner. In addition to the panel of judges, there is also a technical panel that determines the name and the level of difficulty of each element as it is performed.

Skeleton
Skeleton got its name from the sled used — originally metal, now fiberglass and metal — as it resembles a human skeleton. To start, a skeleton slider grasps the handles on either side of the sled, runs as fast as possible for approximately 50 metres, then dives head first onto the sled. Sliders lie on their stomachs and steer by shifting their bodies very slightly.

There are two individual skeleton events in the Olympic Games: one for men and one for women. Both events consist of four heats held over two days, timed electronically to 0.01 seconds. The individual with the lowest combined time wins.

Whistler will be busy with all of the Alpine events. As we all know it doesn't matter if it is sunny or cloudy day you can easily get sunburnt. UVA (ultraviolet-A): long- wave solar rays of 320-400 nanometers (billionths of a meter). Although less likely than UVB to cause sunburn, UVA penetrates the skin more deeply, and is considered the chief culprit behind wrinkling, leathering, and other aspects of "photoaging." The latest studies show that UVA not only increases UVB 's cancer-causing effects, but may directly cause some skin cancers, including melanomas. UVB (ultraviolet-B): short-wave solar rays of 290-320 nanometers. More potent than UVA in producing sunburn, these rays are considered the main cause of basal and squamous cell carcinomas as well as a significant cause of melanoma. Manuel Osborne-Paradis who is competing in the Downhill and Super-G will be on the hills and need not only the sun protection but the moisture for his skin.

Alpine skiing
In alpine skiing, racers can reach speeds of more than 130 kilometres an hour, travelling down a vertical drop that ranges from 180 metres (slalom) to 1,100 metres (downhill) for men and 140 metres (slalom) to 800 metres (downhill) for women. The vertical drop is made even more difficult because of a series of gates the skiers must pass through. Skiers who miss a gate must then climb back up and go through the missed gate or be disqualified.

Downhill
The downhill event features the longest course and the highest speeds in alpine skiing. Each skier makes a single run down a single course. The fastest time determines the winner.
Super-G
Super-G, for super giant slalom, combines the speed of downhill with the more precise turns of giant slalom. The course is shorter than downhill but longer than the giant slalom course. Each skier makes one run down a single course. The fastest time determines the winner.
Giant Slalom
Giant slalom is similar to the slalom, with fewer, wider and smoother turns. Each skier makes two runs down two different courses on the same slope. Both runs take place on the same day. Usually the first run is held in the morning and the second in the afternoon. The times for both runs are then combined with the fastest total time determining the winner.
Slalom
Slalom features the shortest course and the quickest turns. As in the giant slalom, each skier makes two runs down two different courses on the same slope. Both runs take place on the same day. The times are added together and the fastest total time determines the winner.
Super Combined
The combined event consists of one downhill run followed by one slalom run using a shorter course. The times are added together. The fastest total time determines the winner.

The sport of Curling can get a little stressful. With women's and men's teams, Canada has always dominated at this sport. This is a sport has "ends" similar to baseballs innings, so it can take some time to complete, the athletes will be spending time on the ice and under pressure trying to capture gold for Canada!

CURLING
At the Olympic Winter Games, curling consists of two events: a women’s tournament and a men’s tournament. Each tournament starts with 10 curling teams. Two teams play against each other at a time. The game is played on ice, and the two teams take turns pushing 19.1-kilogram stones towards a series of concentric rings or circles. The object is to get the stones as close to the centre of the rings as possible.

One game consists of 10 “ends”. During each end, each four-person team “throws” (in fact, slides along the ice) eight stones — two stones per person and 16 altogether. Team members sweep the ice clean in front of each stone to control the stone’s direction, known as its “curl,” and the stone’s speed. The team with the most points — more stones closer to the centre of the rings — at the conclusion of 10 ends, is the winner.

Out at the Richmond Oval and the Pacific Coliseum, Speed Skating short and long track is well underway. Kristina Groves has won Bronze for Canada in the 3,000 metre race on Sunday! The Canadian hopefuls Clara Hughes, Kristina Groves and Cindy Klassen, skating at the Richmond Oval have a cold climate to deal with. They have kept the building and ice extremely cold for the skaters since we are at sea level. Speed skating is the fastest human powered, non-mechanical aided sport in the world. Skaters can reach speeds of more than 60 kilometres per hour. If you think about it, the 3,000 metre race (1.86 miles) can be done in under 4 minutes...Sometimes we can't even drive that fast/far in rush hour traffic!

Speed skating takes place on a 400 metre oval ice rink. Timed to one-hundredth of a second, athletes compete in pairs, skating counter-clockwise around the oval and changing lanes once per lap, to equalize the distance covered. On Saturday night Jennifer Heil won Canada's first Olympic Silver Medal for 2010 in Freestyle Skiing. It was wet and windy and looked like the fog could roll in again at any moment under the lights at the Cypress Mountain course. Freestyle Skiing
Aerials
Strategically, competitors determine their inrun location based on the type of jump performed, their own freestyle technique and the current environmental conditions. Correct inrun speed is critical to successful aerial performances and athletes can choose two of many different jumps that combine back flips and twists with differing degrees of difficulty. Athletes are judged on the quality of take off, height gained, form and body position, and how they maintain balance upon landing. All competitors complete two jumps in a qualification round. The 16 aerialists with the highest total scores from the qualification round move on to the final round. In the final round, competitors complete two more jumps in reverse order from the qualification results. The aerialist with the highest combined score from the two final jumps wins.

Moguls
Athletes choose which of the three to four different lines they will ski down on the mogul course. After the start signal, they ski down a steep slope and over a series of offset large bumps (moguls) as high as 1.2 metres, spaced between three to four metres apart. There are two sets of ‘air bumps’, one near the top of the course, the other near the bottom, where the skiers are required to perform two different jumps of their own choice.

The goal is to ski down the course as fast as possible while performing the two jumps without technical errors or loss of balance. Different mogul jumps include the 360- to 1080-degree spins, loops (side flips), off axis jumps, back and front flips, and flips with twists. The jumps can incorporate different grabs or holds of the legs or skis. Going down the moguls, skiers need to keep their upper bodies facing straight down the hill while their lower body and skis are constantly turning. Maintaining snow contact with the skis is an important element.

All competitors participate in a qualification round. The top 20 skiers from the round move into the final with the start list in reverse order of the qualification results. The five “turn” judges award points based on the quality of the skiers’ turns, making deductions for technical mistakes. The two “air” judges determine what jump was performed, how high they are off the jump, and the jump’s quality. Each run is timed and compared to a pace-time set for the course, with the fast skiers being awarded more points. The skier with the highest score in the final round wins.

For the first time in history, BC Cancer Agency scientists have decoded all of the three billion letters in the DNA sequence of a metastatic lobular breast cancer tumour and have found all of the mutations, or “spelling” mistakes that caused the cancer to spread.The landmark study, which will be published tomorrow as the cover story in the prestigious international science journal Nature, helps unlock the secrets of how cancer begins and spreads, thus pointing the way to the development of new breast cancer treatment targets and therapies.

The Basics
Sun protection is an everyday must for anyone concerned with keeping their skin in top shape (and that includes avoiding wrinkles, brown discolorations, building collagen, keeping skin firm, and even preventing skin cancer).

SPF 15 is the minimum rating to look for and greater is better for some skin colors and conditions; all sunscreens must be liberally applied; and UVA protection is critical.

UVA protection depends on the active ingredients in the product you are using so be sure one or more of these active ingredients are included: avobenzone (sometimes listed as butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane), titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, Mexoryl (ecamsule) or, outside the U.S., Tinosorb.

Decisions, Decisions
There are several important factors that influence how you choose and should apply a sunscreen:

How long you are going to be in the sun or sitting next to a window (UVA radiation, the sun's most damaging rays, come through windows). The longer you are going to be in the sun or exposed to UVA radiation via windows the higher the SPF number you need to look for.

Are you willing to apply your chosen sunscreen liberally? No matter what SPF rating you choose, you have to apply it liberally. If you aren't applying it liberally always go for a higher number to assure you are getting as much sunscreen ingredients on your skin as possible.

Will you be swimming or perspiring heavily? If so, go for sunscreens labeled water resistant or very water resistant. Be sure to reapply as directed, especially after toweling off.

You'll also want to take into consideration your skin type and whether or not you'll be wearing makeup.

Those with normal to dry skin should use sunscreens in a lotion or cream base.

Those with oily or combination skin should go for sunscreens formulated in a lightweight lotion with a matte finish, a liquid, or an alcohol-free gel base. Many spray-on sunscreens are excellent for oily skin.

If you're going to be wearing foundation, you can choose a foundation with sunscreen and pair it with a moisturizer with sunscreen and a pressed powder with sunscreen!

What's Your Rating? Your ideal SPF number is a multiplication figure based on your skin color and the SPF number on the product. Identify Your Skin Color:

Level 1 skin is very fair and often freckled. It burns easily within about 20 minutes of direct sun exposure and never tans. This is common for people with blue eyes and blonde or red hair.

Level 2 skin is fair to light and often burns with about 30 minutes of direct sun exposure. Tanning may occur but is minimal. This is common in people with blue, green, or hazel eyes and red, blonde, or light brown hair.

Level 3 skin is light to medium or olive and sometime burns with about 40 minutes of direct sun exposure. Tanning is possible, but typically sunburn happens first. This level can apply to those of any hair or eye color.

Level 4 skin is medium to tan skin that rarely burns but can turn pink in about 60 to 90 minutes of direct sun exposure yet often tans easily. This is commong for people with dark hair and eyes.

Level 5 skin is brown to dark brown skin that very rarely burns and tans easily in about two hours of sun exposure. Those with dark hair and eyes and of Middle Eastern or African-American descent are usually at this level.

Level 6 skin is black skin that never burns and always tans, though a tan is usually not apparent due to depth of natural skin color.

REGARDLESS OF YOUR SKIN COLOR AND HOW EASILY YOU TAN, WRINKLES, SKIN DISCOLORATIONS, AND SKIN CANCERS ARE PRIMARILY CAUSED BY UNPROTECTED SUN EXPOSURE!

Your Level of Sunburn Risk x by the SPF Rating = Safe Sun Exposure for Your Skin Color

The SPF number is a rating that determines how long you can stay in the sun without burning when you wear that product without needing to reapply it. It does not indicate quality of protection, just length of time. Here's how to do the math.

If you have:
Level 1 skin (very fair)
That means you usually get a burn in about 15 to 20 minutes of unprotected sun exposure. Determining your skin's response to various SPF ratings works like this:
SPF 15 x 20 minutes = 300 minutes (5 hours) of protection
SPF 30 x 20 minutes = 600 minutes (10 hours) of protection
SPF 45 x 20 minutes = 900 minutes (15 hours) of protection

Level 2 skin (fair to light)
That means you usually get a burn in about 30 minutes of unprotected sun exposure. Determining your skin's response to various SPF ratings works like this:
SPF 15 x 30 minutes = 450 minutes (7.5 hours) of protection
SPF 30 x 30 minutes = 900 minutes (15 hours) of protection
SPF 45 x 30 minutes = 1,350 minutes (22.5 hours) of protection

Level 3 skin (light to medium/olive)
That means you usually get a burn in about 40 minutes of unprotected sun exposure. Determining your skin's response to various SPF ratings works like this:
SPF 15 x 40 minutes = 600 minutes (10 hours) of protection
SPF 30 x 40 minutes = 1,200 minutes (20 hours) of protection
SPF 45 x 40 minutes = 1,800 minutes (30 hours) of protection

Level 4 skin (medium to tan)
That means you usually get a burn in about 60 minutes of unprotected sun exposure. Determining your skin's response to various SPF ratings works like this:
SPF 15 x 60 minutes = 900 minutes (10 hours) of protection
SPF 30 x 60 minutes = 1,800 minutes (30 hours) of protection
SPF 45 x 60 minutes = 2,700 minutes (45 hours) of protection

Level 5 and Level 6 skin (brown to dark brown or black)
That means you usually get a burn in about 120 minutes (2 hours) of unprotected sun exposure. Determining your skin's response to various SPF ratings works like this:
SPF 15 x 120 minutes = 1.800 minutes (*30 hours) of protection
SPF 30 x 120 minutes = 3,600 minutes (60 hours) of protection
SPF 45 x 120 minutes = 5,400 minutes (90 hours) of protection

*Note that level 5 and 6 skin should do just fine with a well-formulated sunscreen rated SPF 15. However, liberal applications is still important. If you do not think you'll be applying the sunscreen as liberally as you should, consider a sunscreen rated SPF 30.

Keep in mind: Regardless of the SPF rating no sunscreen can block 100% of the sun's rays. That's why you may still get a mild sunburn or begin to tan after spending a few hours in the sun, and why it's important to consider other sun-smart tips. Those tips include avoiding the sun during peak hours (10 a.m.- 2 p.m.), seeking shade when possible, and wearing protective clothing, including broad-brimmed hats and sunglasses.

Decoding Sensitive Skin

What is sensitive skin? This is a topic that confuses a lot of people. Sensitive skin is not a medical term. You won’t find it in any medical journals. It’s a layman’s term and is thus very subjective. The term means different things to different people. There’s no clear definition.

If sensitive skin isn’t a medical term, what symptoms are people confusing with sensitive skin? Some people who have itchy or red skin describe their skin as sensitive. Others have a history of eczema or dermatitis also will use the term.

Are you seeing an increase in patients that are coming to you with skin irritations? Absolutely. There clearly is a rise in patients with this kind of concern.

What causes our skin to become more easily irritated as we age? As we age, the epidermal barrier is not as efficient as it once was and allows more contact with the environment. This increases the chance of a reaction in the skin. Sun damage is also a big contributor.

Does pollution or stress play a role in skin that is more sensitive? Perhaps. Both can affect the integrity of the epidermal barrier. We need more scientific studies to really understand this. It’s true that our environment has never been as polluted as it is now. This is a relatively new phenomenon.

How do you treat skin that is easily irritated? Avoid caustic and irritating substances such as bleach, hair dye, solvents and cleaners.

Are there any ways to strengthen the skin and make it more resistant to outside aggressors? The use of barrier creams (good moisturizers) is a good way to protect the skin. Make sure it contains a broad spectrum sunscreen.

Can strong scent affect the skin? Absolutely. Strong scent can definitely affect the skin. Many products that are labeled fragrance-free actually contain “masking fragrances” anyway. Some common ingredients that are beneficial to the skin naturally give off an unpleasant odour. So, chemists have to mask this with a fragrance. I recommend you read the label carefully or ask your doctor to read the ingredients label if you are concerned with fragrance in your skincare products.

Can you share any tips for soothing skin that is easily irritated? It’s best to use tepid water. Avoid hot water when cleansing. You might want to see a dermatologist for prescription medication (topical and sometimes oral) to rapidly soothe skin if it is really irritated.

New Years Resolutions.... We all make them and this year let's make sure we make them realistic and keep to them!

#1 - Be realistic by setting achievable goals. "I want to lose a whole bunch of weight." Is to vague, "start walking 15 minutes a day or join a pilates class once a week" is much more attainable. Even better if you can find a friend to work out with you'll motivate each other.

October is Breast Cancer Month

This past October was Breat Cancer Awareness Month and here at A Touch Above $5 from every pedicure was donated to the BC Cancer Foundation. We raised just over $200 and want to thank everyone for their support.

Fall Skin

I love living in Vancouver, and I love the fall! To me there is almost nothing better than a beautiful day where the sun is shining and the air is crisp. But this time of year wreacks havoc on my skin. October is usually the month where the heat comes on, but I also like a cool room at night, which means my skin goes from the dry heat during the day, to fresh air at night which can also be damaging. For a long time I suffered through this time of year just hoping spring would hurry up and get here so my skin could go back to normal. To me Fall used to mean dry, flaky irritated skin, but not anymore.

Everyone knows the benefits of regular exfoliation, but rarely do we actually do it. For me, I always thought my skin was way too sensitive and it would just make things worse. I had tried everything (or so I thought) and nothing had worked. What was more honest though is that I would try things once or twice and and if it didn't work right away, I stopped. Or I would follow a routine for a couple weeks and then get lazy, but I always blamed the product because as the youngest of three girls nothing is ever my fault.

Last year was a particularily bad year for my skin. By the time November came my skin was so flaky and tight that I couldn't wear makeup. I have used Dermalogica since 2003 and love the product line. But was always a little stubborn and only used the same things over and over again. I used to tell people all the time that you need to change your products based on what your skin is going through at the time but I never followed my own advice. Until things got so bad I didn't know what to do, except listen to myself.

Here is what I prescribed for myself, and yes it changed my life (or at least my skin).
Essential Cleansing Solution
Soothing Protection Spray
Daily Resurfacer
Hydrating Booster
Power Firm for eye and lip
Super Rich Repair (with Solar Booster Added)

These were the products I used all through the Fall and Winter until the launch of the Age Smart Line. Once spring came I switched moisturisers and cleansers. Now I use the Skin Resurfacing Cleanser everyday with my Daily Resurfacers.

I will never go back to my old way of thinking about exfoliation. If I ended up on a desert island and could only have 2 products with me, one would be an exfoliant (probably the Skin Resurfacing cleanser because it is AMAZING!!).
